  • Ensign Affair Impacts GOP On the Diamond

How does the Republican Congressional baseball team spell relief? In the past, Republicans spelled it E-N-S-I-G-N. But for Wednesday's annual Congressional baseball game between Democrats and Republicans, the GOP bullpen will be a little short because of an A-F-F-A-I-R.

The admission of extramarital infidelity by Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) is sidelining the Republicans' star relief pitcher for the game at Nationals Park, home of the Major League's Washington Nationals.

"He's not here. You'd think he'd fly back for the game," said Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), the Republican manager.

Ensign's started at least one game as pitcher for the Republicans. He was scheduled to work out of the bullpen Wednesday. But Ensign, one of only a few senators who play in the game, was known for his versatility on the diamond.

Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) will start for the GOP. Reps. Adam Putnam (R-FL) and Duncan Hunter, Jr. (R-CA) will be available in relief for the Republicans.

"We'll certainly miss his athletic ability tonight," conceded Barton. "We hope he'll be back next year."

Democrats are favored in this year's contest after a long streak of wins by Republicans.

The Sen. Ensign story is front page above the fold two days in a row, while the more egregious adultery of Rep. Loretta Sanchez is completely ignored by the congressional media? Could it be that she is a Democrat? Extra, extra, read all about it-- http://latinopoliticsblog.com/2009/06/02/the-making-of-the-%E2%80%9Cloretta-sanchez-scandal%E2%80%9D/ http://orangejuiceblog.com/2009/06/is-congresswoman-loretta-sanchez-having-an-affair-with-a-married-defense-lobbyist/

let the first without sin cast the first stone" Great biblical words to live by, I do! Mr Ensign did cast stones! Clinton, Edwards, and the Senator From Idaho! He cast the first stone and either called for resignation or said they were discredited. He did cast the first stone. If you read the Las Vegas Sun newspaper web site, there "appears" and I say appears to be some pay irregularity with the woman's family? Is it true, I do not know but why is the Fox news channal not looking into this? Yesterday, the site had nonstop coverage of the President murdering a fly, but no questions about Ensign? I would like to know what is going on. He is not some low life, low politician, and some small town mayor. This man is(was) the 4th ranking Republican and some say "future" of our party? What say you? His leadership on issues and Promise Keepers. What about 100% rating with the Christian Coalition? Does that not mean anything anymore? Do we have to stoop to defending it by saying" well they(Democrats)did this? Can we as conservatives just say no he was wrong and we are disowning him, he is not one of us? Must we stoop to that level. Can we just call a spade a spade? I am starting to wonder if what we are hearing from "our" leaders and media isn't exactly what we stood against. As a party our numbers are terrible. I saw a pole today 25%? We are stooping to school yard tactics, "oh yey, well you did this....?" I thought in Nov 1980 I was voting for change... now we are what we have rallied against, we have become "them" I'm done!

I want to make sure I have this right. This Senator was separated from his wife...Not living with her...Contemplating divorce...and starts dating. We all have done that when we separate from our spouses, we just refrain from seeing married people still with their spouses if even that is the case here. Not enough facts except HE WAS APART FROM SAID SPOUSE when he saw another woman. I know all about the legality of adultery but come on people...who waits the full time before the divorce is final to begin meeting people..NOBODY! Why is the media chastising this guy? Oh I know...he is a Conservative so therefore they hold him to a different set of standards than they do their liberal counterparts. That is not saying much for the men of the Liberal Party...I guess that is why one of our liberal Presidents got re-elected after his adulterous affair and his wife WAS IN THE HOUSE...I meant to say the White House. Is any agency looking into the extortion crime this man had to endure? I noticed the media isn't pursuing that angle of the story. Only in America. The best to both the Senator and his wife and am glad they were able to get through this...many do not. Oops...was I suppose to talk about the game????

Shame on the 538 members of our legislature for participating in this silliness. It seems they are "fiddling while Rome burns." As for closeted Adam Putnam, I always thought he was a "catcher," not a "pitcher." Hmmmm.

Typical FOX News. Republican senator admits to having affair behind his wife's back, is caught paying out money to the mistress & her family members, and the most FOX can find to say about it is the guy will miss some GOP baseball games. FAIR and BALANCED as usual.

Let me guess, while liberals, who are notoriously known for being "do-gooders," and who rarely are caught in piccadilloes of any sort, be it social, like this stuff, or business, like Enron, will still be called "criminals" by the right, this dude will be spun as "brave" to "tell us the truth" about his SLEEPING WITH HIS SECRETARY WHILE PRETENDING TO BE THE QUIINTESSENTIAL CHRISTIAN. The right has become so predictable, that if I hear one rightist tell me, "that was wrong," I will be stunned. I instead expect to hear what a "courageous and honest man" Mr. Ensign is, and how, despite the "bashing" he's (going to be) recieving, he's just "plain old folk," unlike those REAL cheaters. I am willing to bet the farm that within forty eight hours of me writing this, I will read in four places that Ensign is a "good, noble and defiant man" for "braving the media bias of the liberal press." I can't wait!

Apparently the diamond wasn't the only place he was versatile.
