From the very beginning the Taiño indians fought to expel the Spaniards from the island known as Boriñquen (this is what the island of Puerto Rico was called by the Taiño indians). Hence the battle to keep Boriñquen free from foreign invaders began over five hundred years ago. As time progressed there were native born children from a mixture of Taiño, Spanish, and African roots. This is what the Puerto Ricans people are made of and we recognize and cherish our cultural background. Yet the people fron the United States don't accept each other based on their racial differences. Puerto Ricans clearly exemplify the acceptance of our ethnicity. Historically, Puerto Ricans fought the Spaniards to liberate themselves from foreign oppression. One rebellion occurred int the town of Lares, Puerto Rico on September 23, 1868. Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful but it illustrates the the passion for freedom that Puerto Ricans yearn to obtain in the near future. Just as the thirteen colonies did when it decided to fight for it's freedom from England. The Declaration of Independence written in 1776did not necessarily guarantee freedom for everyone. It did not liberate the slaves, guarantee the native Indians their freedom to keep living in the colonies, neither the right for women to considered as equals. Yet, it staed that all men were created equal. This is a contradiction in itself based in the Declaration. How can a country such as the United States call it is self a democracy when it prohibited Puerto Ricans the right to express their views for freedom during the early 1930 till the present time. The Muzzle law act was imposed (law 53) upon Puerto Ricans which ciminalized all acts which favored Puerto Rico's independence. What other recourse did Puerto Ricans have then to rebel. One needs to know their history before condemning Puerto Ricans for fighting for their rights. Que viva Puerto Rico libre!

Puerto Rico was obtained by the US as war booty at the end of the Spahish American war of 1898 and hasn't relinquished control yet.

The US hasn't made PR a state because it doesn't have the right to do so. Puertoricans have rejected that option in sevaral referendums.

Some people's ignorance about Puerto Rico is staggering. Puerto Rico has its problems and being a U.S. colony is not the answer. It's time for Puerto Rico to work for itself and find its own voice. Every former Spanish colony has reached its independence except for Puerto Rico. I think just the Idea of the US still having colonies is just ridiculous. This is a conquered land! First by the Spanish Crown, and now by what some may call US Imperialism. Time for Puerto Rico to wake up and realize that Puerto Ricans know what is best for Puerto Rico, not the US government. Let us not forget the 13 colonies of the British Crown that became the US. Puerto Rico still being a US colony, is no less a maddening thought, than imagining the US itself still being a colony of England.

This is an excerpt of the song they were singing when they stood up in the house: Gloria a esas manos aborígenes porque trabajaban.

Why are we holding on to them? If they don't want us, let them go. Of course, we should take all the benefits of the USA with us, maybe at that point they'd appreciate the USA. I'm tired of being taken advantage of and being called the bad guy at the same time. Don't waste anymore of my hard earned tax dollars on anyone that cannot appreciate that someone else is sacrificing for their "entitlement" program.

You pay great tribute to your nick name "No brain - er" whatsoever. Only a minuscule part of the puerto rican population is on welfare. I lived there for a few years and they are hard working middle class just like you an me. Their plea for equal rights (voting and so on) or independent its a very legitimate one indeed, since they have valiantly fought in our war and contributed a great deal to our economy. A shameful and very ignorant comment my friend.
